Char Kamans, Hyderabad
Year : 2007
Client : Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation & Department of Tourism
About Project :
So much has been written and said about the initial planning of the old city of Hyderabad by the Qutb Shahi dynasty, but does a person really see that idea of theirs physically? This line of thought coupled with the need to identify a common physical ‘reference point’ for all the intervention works led to the conceptualization of the principle of the conservation plan of the four Kamans. Undoubtedly the CIB intervention in 1920’s respected the axis of the Kamans and the layout of the area. Being designers, and citizens, looking to contribute to the continuum, it gives us enough reason to ‘revive that: which is most important’ to us and Hyderabad.
The value of the Kamans; all four of them together, is more worthy of preservation than each individually. But the current physical condition of each Kaman and the physical context surrounding it differs drastically. Hence the intervention program for each of them should, essentially, also be different. In conceptualizing this, effort has been made to bring them in coherence. This is achieved by the principle stated above. More clearly it is achieved by,
- Maintaining the visual axis of Kamans with Gulzar Houz as centre.
- Maintaining the physical axis of Kamans with Gulzar Houz as centre.
- Using similar principles while specifying the colour, finish and lighting schemes for each of the Kaman.
Each Kaman, again, has issues which require specific intervention programs. In proposing these, each Kaman has been viewed as part of the four and hence the road plan between these Kamans has also been considered. These conservations works are presently in the tender stage.
